Seeing Clearly

I’ve worn glasses on and off for a couple of years…and by on and off I mean that I go through seasons of straining my eyes, getting headaches and frustration when I don’t wear my glasses.

A couple months back I decided to make an appointment to have my prescription checked with Iris. Along with updating my prescription, I learned that I have a stigmatism which causes my eyes to strain when trying to read things like road signs, as well as causes tension headaches after trying to do things like read, work on my laptop, or concentrate on anything for long periods of time. After figuring out the important details like which style of glasses to get (obviously), Iris helped me navigate which lenses to get as well as recommended a blue light filter for my glasses due to the hours I spend looking at screen for work. This specific coating helps to prevent strain, improves sleep patterns, and prevents long term eye damage.

If you currently wear prescription eye glasses or are interested in a blue light filter for your glasses, you need to go check out the solutions that Iris has!

Don’t Miss A Moment

It comes as no surprise to anyone that I love to be active. Outdoor activities have always been a big part of my life, starting way back while growing up on a farm in Mesopotamia, Ohio. I loved fishing and hunting with my brothers, I showed cattle professionally (yup!), and spent most of my growing up life outside.  As I started to venture out and try different sports, one thing that held me back was my eyesight. My eyes weren’t horrible, but when it came to more precision sports like tennis for instance, not having good eyesight kept me from playing more often. Glasses were a pain, and I wore them when I had to, but having them bounce around on my face was annoying and the ended up on my bathroom counter more than on my face.

I turned 34 this past June, and I finally followed through and did what I’ve wanted to do for years…I got contact lenses! Goodbye to blurry trees flying at my face while snowboarding and goodbye to not seeing moments clearly while I play with my kids. One major factor that pushed me over the edge and got me prioritizing my eyes was the realization that my health is no longer just my own.

Since brining these 3 amazing babies into this world, I’ve been stretched to look beyond myself and follow through on decisions that are best for my family as well. Squinting while I played seemed fine while I was single, or even when it was just Troy and I, but while teaching and protecting the most important little people in my life, this had to change. I made an appointment with an IRIS Optometrist to get an updated prescription, get my eyes measured for contacts, and for the first time in my life, I can see clearly without my glasses! I’ve now hiked, played baseball and swam with my kids no longer worrying about what I’m missing!

I’m so thankful for the IRIS team who has surrounded me through this process and helped me understand the “WHY” behind my eye health, and helped me change the way I see my life (literally!)

Staying Active And Summer Styles With Iris

Vancouver is blowing us away this summer with glorious temperatures and blue skies. If you have ever been to Vancouver in the summer, you’ll know there is nothing like it! And when the weather is good, this city turns into a fitness junky’s dream!

Breath taking hiking, beautiful beaches, and some of the greatest fitness studios you will find in North America. Finding an activity will never be a problem in Vancouver, but choosing which one probably will be;)

This summer’s activities have looked a little different from most years for me.

In the past I would have stuck with my normal fitness routine of Pilates, weight-lifting, and hitting up as many classes as possible. Since transitioning to a rainier city fall through spring, I have learned to really appreciate the drier summer months. These days I find myself picking up my long board, throwing on some running shoes and getting creative with my outdoor workouts.

These countless hours in the sun have been amazing and have added a sunny glow to my skin, but I am also becoming more and more aware of the amount of time my eyes are now in the sun. Last week after my eye exam at Iris, I spent some time with the optometrist going over a few ways to protect my eyes from the loss of pigmentation.  In the past, I viewed sunglasses as an accessory that I’d only wear if it matched my outfit, or felt necessary if I was at the beach all day. It’s amazing how a little bit of education can completely change your perspective, especially when it’s dealing with something as important as being able to see!

After trying on a few new styles of sunglasses from the Iris summer collection, I was even more bought in. Whether you’re biking around the city, hitting the hiking trails or spending hours on a beach volleyball court, Iris has a ton of options that will fit your summer pastimes.

Here a list of some of my favourite styles from the Iris summer collection

Enjoy!

The Heart Behind Dailyroutinefitness

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

In 2007 I married the man of my dreams, and with much excitement, started my journey as a wife. Quickly I realized in marriage it’s harder to hide the skeletons and dark secrets I kept hidden for so long. After a couple of months of marriage, Troy realized there were some deep issues in my relationship with food, and lots of damaged areas when it came to my self-worth. At the time we had no idea counselling was a good option, where to go for help, and where to even start. We prayed, spoke life into the dark places, cried, fought, and survived.

Fast forward 4 years into marriage and I give birth to our first-born McCarthy. I start the journey of motherhood, which included losing the baby weight, and facing some old demons. I was healthier at this point, but still fighting the up hill mental game. I was determined to some how find health and balance in my pain, because my love for Troy and McCarthy was so deep, I needed this for me and them.
Jump ahead, McCarthy is 20 months and I give birth to a perfect little dark-haired boy named Bennett. As soon as they handed him to me, I knew my heart has just grown in size.

After having both McCarthy and Bennett, I battled anxiety and depression, but did my best to hide it.  I would cry in the tub alone asking God to give me the strength to get through the day and do the amazing job of mothering I loved one minute and felt was choking me out the next. When Bennett was 4 months old, I still remember the exact moment I made a decision to launch DailyRoutineFitness. This story has many other details, and there are tons of little moments I want to include in this post, but will save for it for an IGTV story 😉 What I’m going to give you here is a snapshot of the heart behind what I do, and why I so passionately pursue what I feel I have been called to.

In the process of mothering 2 babies, trying to lose the baby weight, struggling with eating disorder demons, depression and anxiety, I was desperately looking for a fellow Mom who would inspire me to fight for my health, remind me how strong I was, and tell me I could love babies and still care for myself. One night I decided I needed to be my own voice of confidence, and as I found my voice I decided I wanted to some how, some way create a space online where Moms could get inspired, be vulnerable and find their strength again.

When I launched DRF,  I was still in the mindset that booty shorts, bra tops, and the perfect face is what would take the fitness Industry by storm. Then I started to actually work with Moms and woman who told me their stories, and over the course of 4 years, I have been broken and rebuilt…and I’m still in process. The investment made by my clients into my life by being honest with their struggles, stories, and victories, has changed me forever. My heart is softer, I see beauty I have never seen before, I love myself more, and daily I’m humbled and honoured to hold space for them.

When Adelaide was born, my world changed forever. My priorities changed, the love for my curves changed. I couldn’t believe that I had been blessed with a daughter. Empowering woman through short shorts, bra tops and the right angles suddenly felt so empty. I knew Adelaide would learn to find her confidence, feminine beauty, and worth by watching her mother love herself. So we did something that either makes or breaks a a company…we re-branded! We took down many of the images that I initially thought would connect with and inspire my audience. Instead, I replaced them with the real, raw moments the have shaped my body, my health and my soul as a woman and mother.

A fellow mom recently texted me saying “I haven’t eaten carbs in days! I desperately need to drop this baby weight.” This text is one of many that reminds me my work is far from done. Moms still need someone to teach them to be strong, to love themselves again, and inspire them to look deeper than the surface. When we focus on what’s happening behind the milk stained shirts, dark circles, forced smiles, and desperate eyes, we create something beautiful that pushes itself from the inside out. Launching a lifestyle/fitness blog and training clients was birthed out of a place of pain, brokenness and insecurity. When I realized that there was a world full of women who were waiting for someone to rise up and believe in them, I dug my heels in, got healthy, and started to speak words of life.

This is DailyRoutineFitness.

Spring & Summer Style With IRIS

In this season of our life, we are constantly in transition. One week it’s potty training, the next week we’re planning “scientist of the day” projects and then on top of it all, organizing summer sports to keep the energy levels of three children at bay.  I feel like in these transition seasons it’s so easy to forget about our personal style and what really makes us unique. The transition into Motherhood, I feel, can often leave us desperately trying to find our footing in many areas of life, including our own personal style. Let’s be honest, there are days we need to succumb to the milk stained t-shirts and over-sized sweats. But there are also days we just want to feel human again and long for the countless hours of freedom we once had to shave both legs and actually plan what to wear.

Along the rather bumpy road of Motherhood, I have come up with little tricks to help me hold onto myself, my love for fashion and ways to find just the right amount of detail to add to my Mom-style.

The hats I wear constantly change, from Mother, to Personal Trainer, to wife, friend, coach….Janitor…I know I’m not alone in this, and many other women can relate to the ever changing roles we play in our day.

Little things like adding a few sunglass styles to your spring/summer wardrobe help to not only protect your eyes, but can also add the perfect detail to update your Spring/Summer look.

For me, throwing on the perfect pair of sunglasses helps me feel confident, whether I’m sporting tired Mom eyes from a long night with the kids or needing a last minute detail before heading out for date night or a drink with friends.

IRIS offers a large variety of brands and styles and I love experimenting with new looks. I’m a classic old school aviator lover, but recently have started adding some new styles to my Spring / Summer looks.  The new Coach HC7078 and Maui Jim Wiki Wiki are currently two of my favorite styles and the perfect transition accessory as I move through my day

Need a little Spring/Summer update? Check out the current IRIS line here or head into your local IRIS store.

Spring Cleaning The Closet

H&M

This spring I decided to slim by closet down, add more basic colours and thrift some items from Troy’s closet. I love neutral colours and classic men styles that are the perfect pairing for the feminine skinny jeans or a old pair of Levi’s. I also love that I have reduced the amount of clutter in my closet and really focused on purchasing pieces I love and can use a hundred different ways.As I’ve slowly removed the clutter of unused clothing,I’ve also become more aware of where it’s going and how it’s being re-used. H&M, launched a clothing recycle program back in 2013 that I was not even aware of till recently. You can drop off your unwanted garments – no matter what brand and what condition – in all H&M stores across the globe. Their goal is to reduce waste, recycle the unwanted and reduce the natural resources needed to produce a new garment. I’ve listed all the details below! Check it out and I’m also interested to hear what you do with your unwanted garments.

As much as 95% of clothes thrown away could have been re-worn or recycled.

Lets change that!!!

There is something about slipping on a dress that holds your body just right and makes you feel like a lady. Then add all of the little details and patterns that make it as though the dress was made specifically for you. This was that dress – and it was one of my favourite date night outfits in California.

Thank you Alana Denham for lending me your closet.

Doell Dates

motherhood
This season has been filled with many changes to our family’s lifestyle and weekly schedules. We try our best to roll with the changes and breathe through the moments of stress that come from uncertainty. When it feels like life is always up in the air, taking intentional time to connect can be hard to do. To counteract these challenges, we have made dating our children and each other one of our top priorities.  Whatever life brings us, this little tribe of ours needs to feel loved, safe and connected. We are continually reminding ourselves that we are on this ride together and that we will love each other hard through every season.

These photos are from a recent family date to Fort Langley, BC.

Thank you Abbie Rose for capturing the day!

xoxo

A Fresh Look For Dailyroutinefitness

about_rachel

Just over two years ago I launched Dailyroutinefitness.com. With the support and love of our readers and clients, I have grown not only as a businesswoman but also as a mother, wife, and writer. Your stories and feedback have inspired me to immerse myself in things that really drive my passions and hold on tightly to the integrity of the “why” behind my work.

I initially launched DRF as a fitness company to showcase workouts and food choices that were part of my life. I quickly realized, however, that I was holding back from sharing with my readers a big part of my passion—lifestyle. I wanted to share more of this with you, my readers, because I felt like it would give you a more realistic view of what life really looks like for us and it would show you that we experience successes and failures as parents, friends, and business owners, just like you. The heart of my business as a personal trainer and coach is encouraging woman to press into discomfort and really dig into what’s holding them back from reaching their fullest potential, as well as offering them support to set and achieve their goals. My hope as a lifestyle blogger is that woman and mothers find in my posts encouragement, inspiration, and an authentic touch that will help them feel more fulfilled. The time has now come, however, for me to make some more changes and really use my gifts and passions to connect with you, my readers, in a greater capacity.

lifestyle

As the website has grown, we have had the amazing opportunity to share and partner with companies that we really believe in and feel would add to your lifestyles. Because of the amazing support of our members and sponsors over the past two years, we have decided to change DRF from a membership site to open access.

What does this mean?

Until today, my workout videos, blog tips, workout plans and sample meal plans have only been available to our paying members.

But as of today, all private content at dailyroutinefitness.com will be available to the public for FREE! I’m so excited about this because it will open up more opportunities to share helpful content with you on a weekly basis.

I will also be adding our videos to YouTube as well in order to give you easy access and sharing options.

Can you share workouts with friends?

Yes! And I would love for you to be part of helping the community of DRF to grow. The more we grow as a company, the greater resources and variety we can bring to our site and make available to you our readers.

How to share?

Simple click on the URL code at the top of your screen and copy and paste the links from my page that you would like to share. Everything from workouts to recipes to blog posts.

I would also love for you to share your own workouts, thoughts, and inspiration on social media and tag #Dailyroutinefitness. I love hearing your stories and connecting with you!

I want to say a special thank you again to all the people who believed in, supported, and offered mentorship to me as I stepped into the unknown world of building a website, taking on Instagram, and becoming a blogger.

Thank you to Megan White for the hard work and flexibility she has put into helping me rebrand and rework DRF. You have been such a pleasure to work with, Meg!

Thank you, too, to Abbie Rose, our amazing photographer, for capturing the most beautiful moments of our family’s life through her lens. Abbie, your images inspire so much of my work as a writer. The authenticity of the moments and emotion that you capture is such a gift. Thank you for being a part of the DRF team.

To our members:

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to invade your life through my personal posts and become a part of your daily sweat sessions one workout video at a time. Your support and dedicated feedback during my growing pains have made me who I am today.

I’m excited to continue to grow with you…

Rachel
